How to choose a pro for aquatic weed & algae control
- Ask for the company's PDA pesticide application business license number and check it on PDA's public search. Hired applicators need a PDA business license (aquatic = category D); check it on PDA's public search.
- Ask who will file the Chapter 91 permit and in whose name. DEP usually issues the permit to the person who owns or manages the property, not to the person who applies the product. Treatment can't start until it's approved: Any herbicide or algaecide in a pond needs a joint DEP/PFBC Chapter 91 permit first, at any amount.
- Ask which product they'll use, whether it's labeled for aquatic use, and how they'll avoid a fish kill. Treat in sections, early in the season: decaying plants can strip oxygen and kill fish.
- Get a written scope: which areas, how many treatments, what follow-up.
- Ask for a certificate of insurance; insurance on listings is self-reported.
- Ask about non-chemical options too: raking, aeration, barley straw, grass carp.
Credentials on listings are self-reported. Insurance and licenses: ask for proof.
